Introduction of black walnut in Ukraine and its economic and biological significance

INTRODUCTION OF BLACK WALNUT IN UKRAINE AND ITS ECONOMIC AND BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

On the basis of the literary sources analysis on the taxonomic materials and acquaintance with the results of the scientific researches on the crop Juglans nigra described the history of its spread in Ukraine has been beginning from the first period of the 19th century, from the plantations in the Krasnokutsk dendropark. The genus Juglans species have been determined, which are common in Ukraine in forest crops. The valuable properties of the black walnut trees and their fruits have been depicted in detail, as well as this crop productivity under the industrial conditions of cultivation and in the forest plantations of our country. The yield of their kernel varies from 14 to 26 % depending on a cultivar. The authors present the geographical spread of the black walnut plantations in the regions of Ukraine. The morphological characteristic of the trees have been described as well as, their growth and during the vegetative period. One of the black nut characteristic appeared to be its bark brown color. The authors presented the biological signs of the species by the organogenesis stages. The analysis of the of black nut properties was made in comparison with other genus Juglans representatives. Their characterization was carried out according to the parameters of the trees physiological properties on the basis of the results of the researches. The required effective temperatures sum for the optimum black nut wall growth and development is at least 2200 ... 2400 degree С. Trees of those species are more frost – Fesislant and winter – hardy than Manchurian and Persian and endure frosts up to -36 degree C. However, in the steppe conditions the young black walnut plants frost biting under the influence of the northern winds is observed, but as their height increases, the harmful frost effects decreases. In the Lisosteppe, damage is rather rare, and in the Western Lisosteppe regions of the Prycarpathia black walnut bears frosts to -40 degree С. That proves the possibility of it growing in Ukraine on an industrial scale.
